Habitats:
Open woodland. Hedgerows and hedgebanks. Open grassy slopes. Shaded montane cliffs and grassy slopes. Widely planted in gardens, parks & demesnes.
Threats:
Native populations are threatened locally by deforestation (particularly of long-established woodland, hedgerows and veteran trees), overzealous grass cutting and overgrazing by livestock due to the lack of woodland boundary fencing. Threatened by importation of non-native cultivars which readily interbreed and spread.
