Melampyrum sylvaticum. Small cow wheat.

Life-form & Growth Form:

Therophyte. Annual. Little/no vegetative spread. 

Spore-producing period: 

June to August.  

Habitats: 

Upland woods and glens; light, humid shade, often close to water. Damp somewhat enriched acidic soils. Wooded ravines. Requires species rich woodland ground layer.  

Threats:

Historic habitat loss and fragmentation through deforestation, particularly removal or fragmentation of long-established woodland. Over-grazing with woodlands, resulting in impoverished ground flora. Isolated populations at increased risk of local extinction through chance events.
