Andromeda polifolia. Bog rosemary.

Life-form & Growth Form:

Chamaephyte. Woody perennial. Rhizomatous, rhizome far-creeping.

Flowering period:

April to June.

Habitats:

Lowland raised bog. Acidic peaty ground.

Threats:

Habitat loss and fragmentation through peat cutting, peatland drainage, overgrazing by livestock, encroachment of both scrub and woodland, and burning of bog vegetation. Eutrophication from adjacent intensive agriculture also threatens peatland habitat at many sites. Many populations are quite distant from one another, greatly increasing the risk of one or more further local extinctions within Northern Ireland.
