Hyacinthoides non-scripta. Bluebell.

Life-form & Growth Form:

Bulbous geophyte. Herbaceous perennial. Tuberous/bulbous with slow cloning offsets.

Flowering period:

April to June.

Habitats:

Calcareous to mildly acidic woodlands. Hedgerows, sandy banks, upland meadows, cliffs. Generally lowland.

Threats:

Hybridisation with the invasive non-native Hyacinthoides hispanica to produce the viable hybrid H. x massartiana.
Owing to the widespread occurrence of the hybrid Bluebell, the apparent inability of plant nurseries and garden centres to distinguish between the two species even when in flower, and the typical flight range of pollinating insects, the hybridisation issue would appear almost impossible to resolve effectively.
