Life-form & Growth Form:

Chamaephyte. Herbaceous perennial. Rhizomatous, rhizome shortly creeping.  

Flowering period: 

July.

Habitats: 

Rock ledges and scree in upland areas, clefts and ravines in base-rich rocks. Rock ledges. Rocky stream banks. Base-rich, rocky woodland.  

Threats:

Habitat loss and fragmentation through loss of woodland, particularly long-established woodland. Eutrophication through agricultural run-off. Overgrazing by livestock. Under-grazing which leads to invasion of tall herb and scrub communities. Forest & heath fires. Being an Arctic-alpine species, climate change may also adversely impact upon O. secunda in the longer term.
