Mega, meso-microphanerophyte. Woody perennial, tree.

Flowering period: 

May to July.

Habitats: 

Acidic soils and peat, in scrub and woodland beside lakes and rivers. Also, fens and lagg zone of lowland raised bogs. Wide range of soils, avoiding drought-prone and waterlogged sites. Generally, lowland. 

Threats:

Wetland drainage and reclamation for agriculture and development. Historic lowering of Lough Neagh water levels. Woodland and scrub clearance. Peat-cutting. Nutrient enrichment. Small population size.
