Life-form & Growth Form:

Mega-, meso- & micro-phanerophyte. Prostrate forms are chamaephyte. Woody, evergreen perennial. Little/no vegetative spread. 

Flowering period: 

May and June.

Habitats: 

Found on grazed grasslands, scrub, heath, short sward grasslands, rocky outcrops, limestone pavement inland and maritime cliffs. Wet calcareous to acidic soils.  

Threats:

Decline due to overgrazing. Undergrazing leading to vegetational succession to woodland. Heath fires. Afforestation. Scrub clearance. Infection with Phytophthora austrocedrae.
