Hemicryptophyte. Herbaceous perennial. Little vegetative spread, the crown of the plant grows under the surface to produce multiple shoots.
Flowering period:
July to August.
Habitats:
Coastal shingle. Coastal dunes, strandlines, cliffs. Lowland.
Threats:
Disturbance of shingle habitats by walkers. Illegal shingle extraction. Coastal squeeze caused by climate change and agricultural enclosure and improvement of uppermost shoreline. Historically also picked and used as a vegetable. Sea defence work and increasingly winter storms which have intensified in number and strength.
