Life-form & Growth Form:

Non-bulbous geophyte. Herbaceous perennial. Little/no vegetative spread. 

Flowering period: 

June to August.

Habitats: 

Typically dense, shaded Fagus woods on calcareous soils. Less commonly in mixed woodland. Occasional in grassy woodland glades and hedge banks.  

Threats:

Habitat loss and fragmentation through deforestation. Thinning of trees to increase illumination in undercanopy. Creation of paths through demesne woodland and excessive disturbance of ground layer by visitors to demesne woodlands.
