Hammarbya paludosa. Bog orchid.
Life-form & Growth Form:
Hemicryptophyte. Herbaceous perennial. Little/no vegetative spread. Ramets detach from leaves.
Flowering period:
July and August.
Habitats:
Permanently wet bogs with typically acidic (but occasionally base-rich), slow-flowing water. Grows from bare peat and Sphagnum carpets, occasionally also among grasses and sedges, often on edge of or within runnels and flushes.
Threats:
Habitat loss and drainage, mainly as a result of peatland cutting and drainage. Overgrazing and poaching by livestock. Undergrazing can allow taller forbs and heath to shade out plants.
