Hemicryptophyte. Herbaceous perennial. Vegetative spread important means of production via short, unbranched rhizomes.  

Flowering period: 

May to July.

Habitats: 

Damp hay meadows. Un-grazed damp woodlands. Stream-sides. Mountain rock ledges. Hedge banks and verges roadside. Upland.  

Threats:

Ploughing and reseeding, changes to farming practices from hay-making to silage production. Cessation of grass cutting. Extended spring grazing. Changes to woodland management such as scrub clearance. Cutting of roadside verges.
